Vijayadashmi or Dasara is the day of victory over evil.
Vijaya Dashami is known by many names like Dushera, Dusshera, Dashahara, Durga utsav, Dasera, Dassera, Dasara & Navratri consists of words Nav, Meaning "nine" & ratri, meaning "nights" Dasshera, means the Tenth Day: Vijayadashmi, or the day of Victory over evil. It is celebrated on the tenth day of the Hindu month of Ashvin which falls in September/October of the Western calendar & is celebrated in different forms across India as well as in Nepal.
At some places in India, the Ram Lila( drama's based on Lord Ram the hero of epic Ramayana) is staged at many parts of country. As well as the epic Ramayana, a Hindu scripture is recited. As Lord Ram had performed "Chandi/Durga/Kali puja" and invoked the blessings of Divine Mother Durga, who blessed Lord Ram with secret knowledge of the way to kill Ravan
.
On the tenth day or the day of victory over evil, a big fair or mela is hold in an open ground. Everybody goes to see the fair or mela. Shops are set up and sweets and other beautiful things are sold.In the middle of the ground , effigies of Ravana, his brother(Kumbhkarna) and son(Meghanad) are set up .They are made of bamboos and coloured papers & prepared by different effigy makers.
Effigy makers bring individual parts like head, stomach legs of effigies in the morning at ground than they set it on the ground. Fire works are placed inside the effigies to burst. The celebrations are on its peak in evening. At the time of sunset they are set on fire which is an exciting event for kids and adults alike and the fair or mela comes to close.
All people go back to their homes,in a joyful and good mood. The festival teaches us many moral lessons.
This is a symbolic act to kill evil. But if we see by spiritual way it is the day of victory owing to one's victory over the evil tendencies for the attainment of a pure mind.
