As India became capital for diabetic people as well as epidemically it is spreading worldwide, really it is a serious issue. In our previous post, we discussed about type 2 diabetes (blood sugar) there should be less harsh and safe herbal treatment which has anti hyperglycemic activity (lowering the high sugar level in blood). We will discuss here about sample diet plan for blood sugar patient.
The purpose of this article is to maintain adequate nutrition, to achieve desirable body weight, to minimize or to prevent onset of chronic degenerative diseases and to maintain normal blood sugar levels in the body.
Diabetics are more prone to develop heart diseases so low fat diets regimen will help them, rich fiber diets are helpful in diabetic patients thus results in slowing down the release of glucose(sugar) in body blood stream.
This sample diet plan purpose is to aware diabetic patients to eat food in regular intervals’ if they are eating three times in a day than they must give regular interval of three hours.
Following are the two sample diet plan for diabetic patients:
First diabetes meal or diet plan is as follows:
Early Morning: Tea or coffee (with low fat milk)
Breakfast: Corn flakes or oats, boiled egg toast
Mid Morning: Mix of fruits/fruit salad/one apple/one to two oranges
Lunch: 2 chapatti or two to three loaf of brown bread(add extra chapatti or brown bread if required) pulses(e:g Bengal gram), vegetable curry / or any other whole dal(pulses), capsicum / bitter melon / or any other vegetable curry/ yogurt /salad
Evening: Tea/milk vegetable sandwich
Dinner 2 chapatti or whole wheat bread slice/cooked dry dal(pulses), cabbage curry / or any other sabzi(vegetable curry) with salad
Bedtime: Rusks
Second diabetes meal or diet plan is as follows:
Early Morning: Almonds or walnuts(over night soaked in water specially in summers)
Breakfast: Cottage paneer(Indian cottage cheese) toast/ Dalia porridge ( broken wheat )
Mid morning: Sprouted pulses
Lunch: Brown Rice, Mixed Yogurt curry( khadhi without pakoras), Bhindi(ladyfinger) sabzi(curry)/cucumber salad, buttermilk (Chaach)
Evening: Baked Beans on toast (100% wheat bread or brown bread)
Dinner: Vegetable soup / tomato soup / chicken soup 2 brown bread slice toast or 2 chapatis (combining wheat flour with channa flour and soya flour)/brown bread/spinach/ paneer curry along with yogurt and salad
Bedtime: One to two biscuits ( whole wheat based)
Diabetic patient must avoid total fasting as the metabolism of the body is altered when a person fasts. This adversely affects the diabetic state.Consult your doctor before you fast.
If a diabetic feels hungry even after eating his/her permissible quota, the person may consume low calorie food called free foods. These give a feeling of fullness.
* Gram horse ( dry roasted or bhuna kala chana) or fresh salads made of cabbage, onion, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, radish and capsicum with only lime, salt and pepper. Do not add any salad dressing like mayonnaise, olive oil etc.
* Black tea, green teas( with flowers petals) or coffee without sugar.
* Lemon juice without sugar.
* Clear soups and rasam without butter or oil.
Deep fried dishes,sweet potato, sweets, beers or wine, fruits like mango ,honey or jaggery should not be usually consumed. However, to avoid craving and a monotonous daily diet, you can take these once in a while.Alcohol should be avoided if diabetes is not under control.
Foods to be used freely are green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, cucumber, soups, buttermilk, tea and coffee without sugar.You cannot eat the same food for a long time. Also while eating out or traveling we think of an exchange list, which means a substitute. Exchanges can be done only within the same group, and on the same day. No carry forwards please.Following is an example of exchange list:
Each portion contains 80 cals.
Chapatti 1 app. 6" diameter (25 gms) can be exchanged with Rice (boiled) 1 small cup (25 gms) uncooked.
Dosa plain ½ app. 10" diameter (40 gms) can be exchanged with Idli 1 piece (medium size) (56 gms).
Mango 11/2 slices (70 gms) can be exchanged with Grapes 25 pieces (80 gms).
Apple 1 medium (80 gms) can be exchanged with Guava 1 medium (100 gms).
* Milk exchange list
1 glass (250 ml) of toned milk can be substituted for skimmed milk 11/3 glasses (375 ml).
Buttermilk 4 glasses (1000 ml) can be substituted for fresh cottage paneer one piece (50 gm).
* Meat and fish
Each portion contains 80 calories.
Mutton 3 pieces 67 gms (raw) can be exchanged with Chicken 1 breast 73 gms (raw).
Fish
Pomfret white 2-3 piece (100 gms) can be exchanged with prawn 8-10 pieces (100 gms).
Any diet plan is based on determining the types of food preparations like are they rich with fibers and carbohydrates or it depends on energy requirements. One should emphasize more on the high fiber foods instead of high fiber supplements available in the market.
